On 30 September 2009 (29 September local time), an earthquake struck South of Samoa. The earthquake was felt in Ibagli, but no damage was reported. Shortly after the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Honolulu, issued a tsunami warning for Ibagli and other Pacific islands.

Upon the issuance of the warning, alert sirens were sounded in all coastal cities and towns. Authorities focused on evacuating all citizens on the South coast. Residents on the North side were also advised to prepare for imminent evacuation.
