Insignia of a Companion of the Royal Ibaglian Order

The Royal Ibaglian Order is an Ibaglian order of chivalry instituted in 1986 by Queen Elizabeth II. The Order includes five classes in civil and military divisions, in order of seniority:

  • Knight or Dame Grand Companion (GCRI)
  • Knight or Dame Companion (K/DCRI)
  • Companion (CRI)
  • Officer (ORI)
  • Member (MRI)

History

When the order was instituted in 1986, it was meant to eventually replace the Order of the Bath, the Order of St Michael and St George, and the Order of the British Empire in Ibagli. Appointments to the two latter orders have continued sporadically, however.

Composition

The Monarch is the Sovereign of the Order and appoints all members of the order (by convention, on the advice of the Government). The Chancellor and Principal Dame Grand Companion of the Order is the Governor-General of Ibagli.

The order is limited to 25 Knights and Dames Grand Companion, 100 Knights and Dames Companion, and 225 Companions. There is no limit on the number of members of the fourth and fifth classes. Appointments are made on the advice of the Government of Ibagli. Foreigners can be admitted to the order as honorary members. Honorary and additional members do not count in the limits of the order. Visiting heads of state are traditionally made honorary Knights Grand Companion of the order.

Insignia

The badge of the Royal Ibaglian Order is an eight-pointed white star, with a representation of the shield of the Coat of Arms of Ibagli surrounded by a blue ring containing gold palm fronds and the word "Ibagli," topped by a royal crown. The ribbon on which the badge is worn is gold with red edges. Knights and dames grand companion wear the badge on a sash worn on the right shoulder. Knights and dames companion and companions wear the insignia suspended from the neck. Officers wear a silver gilt badge with no enamel, and members wear a silver badge with no enamel, both on the left chest. Knights and dames in the first two grades are also entitled to wear a star. The star of a knight or dame grand companion has eight large points, and the star of a knight or dame companion has four large points and four small points. The sovereign and chancellor of the order also receive a collar from which the badge can be suspended.

Privileges

Knights grand companion and knights companion prefix "sir" and dames grand companion and dames companion prefix "dame" to their forenames. Wives of knights are entitled to prefix their surnames with "lady." Knights and dames grand companion use the post-nominal letters "GCRI." Knights companion use "KCRI," dames companion "DCRI," companions "CRI," officers "ORI," and members "MRI." People who are not citizens of a Commonwealth realm may receive honorary membership in the order, but honorary members of the first two classes are not entitled to place "sir" or "dame" before their names.

Knights and dames grand companion may be granted heraldic supporters. Knights and dames grand companion and knights and dames companion may also encircle their arms with the circlet of the order. Members of all grades may have a depiction of their insignia suspended below their arms. The sovereign, chancellor, and previous chancellors of the order are entitled to encircle their arms with a depiction of the order's collar.

Chapel

The chapel of the order is Haphonia Cathedral. A service is held each year at the cathedral for members of the order. The sovereign, chancellor, and ordinary and additional knights and dames grand companion receive stalls in the choir. In addition, there are two visitors' stalls for honorary knights and dames grand companion who choose to attend a service. The banners of knights and dames grand companion are suspended above their stalls, and those of armigerous honorary knights and dames grand companion are also suspended in the choir. The banners are removed after death, but a plate remains in the stall bearing the name and arms of the previous occupant.
