Removable roadblocks and other fortifications were stationed alongside the road at certain points, in an attempt to deny access to the road to Japanese forces in the event of an invasion. Before 1940, [[Fleuve Orange]], the only route from [[Haphonia]] to [[Fleuve Orange]] was a circuitous route through [[Exeter]]. After several high-profile accidents in the 1980s and 1990s, concern began to mount that the road was unsafe and not meeting the demands of modern traffic loads. Construction began in 2001 on a replacement road, the [[M3 Motorway]]. The new motorway opened in 2005.
