Capital punishment was abolished in Ibagli in 1973. The last execution carried out was that of Joseph Malatae, a leader of an aboriginal rights protest. He was hanged at HM Prison Haphonia in June 1972. Between the colonization of Ibagli in 1858 and the abolition of capital punishment in 1973, 22 people were executed. All executions were by hanging. All were executed for murder.
