Document:Steven Spell speech to the Monarchist League
His Excellency the Right Honourable Sir Steven Spell, KP, GCVO, GCRI, CIMM, OIM, KCMG, ID, Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Ibagli, speaking to the Monarchist League of Ibagli
Your Worship, members of the Monarchist League of Ibagli, ladies and gentlemen:
I wish to thank you for inviting me to your dinner tonight. It is truly an honour to be asked to speak to this great organisation. I also wish to bring you greetings from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Ibagli, who in a recent message sent her "warm good wishes and congratulations on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the Monarchist League of Ibagli."
The Monarchist League serves a very important purpose in today's Ibagli. It serves to make all Ibaglians aware of our wonderful system of government. One that was not created out of war and strife, but has evolved throughout the centuries out of ancient traditions and practices. It also serves to ensure that this system is not eroded by status-seeking governments and misinformation.
Today's Crown is an amazing organ of government. It is both flexible and rigid, knowing when to change and when to remain steadfast as a beacon for the generations, as if it is some great symphony, subject to the interpretations of conductors and their orchestras, but always having the same melody.
The monarchy provides us with symbols. Unlike a constitution or flag, as important as those symbols may be, the monarchy provides with a figurehead who, in protecting us all from those who wish to do us harm, provides a rock of stability for all Ibaglians. When someone goes into a post office or a school, they are reminded by the portrait on the wall that Ibagli has a head of state that they can look to for inspiration, whatever their race, political affiliation, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. Even those who wish to see the monarchy abolished fall under the protections of the Crown, as it serves to protect the rights of all Ibaglians, even those who disagree with our current form of government.
All of this would mean nothing, however, were the prerogatives of the crown not exercised by the proper person. We are indeed lucky that Her Majesty, through her decades of experience and excellent training, is our mainstay and our inspiration.
There are precious few nations where a people can look to its leader and see a direct path to its history and its heritage, and I fear that they will decrease in number. Therefore, we must work to ensure that Ibagli never falls prey to the illusions of freedom and enlightenment seen in republicanism. If we are not ever vigilant, our golden system may slip from our hands into the furnace of the past.
As one of the three parts of the Ibaglian Parliament, the Crown serves as a complement, not a detriment, to the democratic process. As an impartial and fair body, it will always serve to foster democratic spirit and to hinder those persons who wish to do it harm.
As a direct link to sixteen other freedom-loving nations, the monarchy again reminds of the freedoms and rights that many of those in other nations are not fortunate enough to possess. In many of those unfortunate nations, one has seen the turmoil and strife that can result from removing their impartial figurehead.
In closing, I feel that I must remind you once again to remain ever-vigilant in defence of the crown and the freedoms it serves to protect. Without the close watch of organisations such as the Monarchist League, the spirit of Ibagli may be lost.
Thank you. Long live the Queen.
